The Report of The 13th International TELLSI Conference

The 13th International TELLSI Conference was held at Lorestan University at Khorramabad, Lorestan, Iran on November 17-19, 2015. The first day of the conference was dedicated to holding workshops. The first workshop, which was successively held by Dr. Zohreh Eslami Rasekh from Texas A&M University and Dr. Noriko Ishihara from Hosei University, focused on teaching students to use language appropriately by raising their knowledge of pragmatics. Investigating, and consequently teaching, the role of using ICT Tools for preparation of pre-service English teachers was the subject of the second workshop, which was held by Dr. Mary Ellis from National Institute of Education, Singapore. In the last workshop, the workshop holder Dr. Mola Miri from Allameh Tabatabaei University, Tehran, Iran talked about humanizing language teaching by elaborating the topic of his workshop – Revisiting and Implementing Critical Pedagogy in Second Language Learning.

 

The Opening Ceremony of the conference began by recitation of the Holy Qur’an on the second day, November 18. Following the recitation, Dr. Khosrow Azizi, Chancellor of Lorestan University, delivered a speech in which he firstly welcomed all the guests, participants and presenters, and secondly talked about the importance of English language in extending the boarders of science. Next, the Conference Chair, Dr. Mahmood Reza Moradian, welcomed participants in his speech; he, then, after having thanked them for creating such an ideal opportunity for discussing their thoughts and the results of their researches regarding the main themes of the conference (New Trends and Criticisms in English Language Teaching and Literature), wished them to have a fruitful experience at the conference, and a wonderful stay at Khorramabad.

 

Dr. Hossein Farhady from Yeditepe University, Istanbul, Turkey, then, delivered his keynote speech titled Significance of Professional Development of EFL Teachers in Language Assessment in which he talked about the importance of improving the teachers’ knowledge of language assessment.

 

After the first keynote speech, presenters, both oral and poster, shared their new findings and contributed to the conference by presenting their papers on Applied Linguistics and English Literature in 13 different panels simultanously. Meanwhile, Dr. Zohre Eslami Rasekh presented her paper titled Public Apologies: Perceptions and Performances as a featured presenter. Consecutively, Dr. Mohammad Reza Anani Sarab presented his featured presentation titled Foreign Language Curriculum Development in Iran: A History of Missed Opportunities.

 

Two of the presentations, including Dr. Christine Coombe's keynote speech titled Professionalizing your English Language Teaching, and a featured talk by Arman Abednia titled Identity Construction in TESOL Teacher Education: Insights from Communities of Practice, were given via video conferencing.

 

The third keynote speech, the title of which was Languaging and Second Language Learning: Theory, Research, and Pedagogy, was given by Dr. Wataru Suzuki from Miyagi University of Education, Sendai, Japan at 2 p.m. on the same day. In his speech, he undertook an endeavor to highlight the role of languaging in the process of learning in general and L2 pedagogy in particular.

 

In the morning of the third day, November 19, Dr. Noriko Ishihara from Hosei University, Tokyo, Japan delivered her keynote speech titled Identity and Pragmatics: Implications for Second Language Acquisition and Instruction. The talk was an attempt to highlight the role of pragmatics and learner identity in Second Language Acquisition (SLA) and to discuss the pragmatic-and-learner-identity-based implications for classroom instruction and assessment.

 

After the first keynote speech of the third day, Dr. Karim Sadeghi presented his featured talk titled Teaching Spoken English in Iran’s Private Language Schools: Issues and Options. Successively, Dr. Manijeh Youhanaee presented a paper titled The L2 Acquisition of Telicity as another featured presenter. Afterwards, Dr. Reza Khani delivered a speech the title of which was Decisions to Make in an Uncertain World: Using Chaos-Driven Fuzzy Logic in TEFL as the last featured presenter of the conference.

 

As the fifth and last keynote speaker, Dr. Peter Mickan from University of Adelaide, Australia presented his lecture titled Text Analysis and Text-Based Teaching: A Social Semiotic Perspective on Language in Use. He, in his speech, tried to endorse text-based instruction as a practical approach to teaching any language.

 

The Closing Ceremony of the conference was held later that day at 4:30 p.m. Dr. Hossein Farhady in a speech intended to appreciate Dr. Mohammad Hassan Tahririan for all the efforts he had put in his scholarly life to teach English students and teachers invited him, Dr. Tahririan, on the stage to give a talk to the audience. The TELLSI 13 conference had already been dedicated to Dr. Mohammad Hassan Tahririan and was held in memory of Late Dr. Mansoor Fahim. Dr. Mohammad Hassan Tahririan, after having thanked Dr. Farhady for his speech, introduced the problem Iranian scholars in the filed faced at the moment not to be learning the language correctly, but teaching it. Finally, keynote and featured speakers as well as workshop holders were appreciated for their scholarly contribution to the conference.
